The project, supported by the European Union, is based on the
provision of telematic services applications to a selected group of European islands, from
the North-Sea and the Baltic to the Eastern Atlantic islands, from the central
Mediterranean to the Greek archipelagos. The project is also being extended to far away
Ulithi, INSULA's atoll-friend, situated in Micronesia in the South Pacific.
Nature and Workmanship ARTIFICIAL WETLANDS THREATENED COASTAL AREAS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN DG XI European Commission
This project is intended to improve and preserve
artificial wetlands in the Mediterranean and to promote awareness on this subject. Worthy
of remark, among the others: salt-pans, rice fields and aquaculture areas.
INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
The Renewable
Energy Plan, developed within the framework of the Altener Program and implemented in
close cooperation between the Consell Insular de Menorca and INSULA, with the technical
realisation of the Institut Menorqui dEstudis, is inserted in the general
sustainable development strategy of the European islands and in the specific lines of
action that the Sustainable Development Plan marks of Menorca.
On 20-22 February
1997 representatives of insular Biosphere Reserves and of related organisations met on the
island of La Palma. Objectives of the meeting were both to reach an agreement with the aim
of creating an Insular Biosphere Reserve Network and to strengthen cooperation by
improving accesibility to electronic communications.
