THE WORLD OF ISLANDS CONFERENCE 
What development on the eve of the year 2000? 
The first World Island Conference, organised jointly by UNESCO and INSULA, where some 250 people from 45 countries met to discuss present and future issues concerning islands. The main theme of the Conference was scientific progress and new technologies for island sustainable development.

Biosphere Reserves
On 20-22 February 1997 representatives of insular Biosphere Reserves and of related organisations met on the island of La Palma.
Objectives of the meeting were both to reach an agreement with the aim of creating an Insular Biosphere Reserve Network and to strengthen cooperation by improving accesibility to electronic communications.
