EREC (the European Renewable Energy Council),
representing the leading European RES industry and research
associations, is organising a special topic conference on
Renewable Energy Sources for Islands, Tourism and Water Desalination
in Crete, Greece on 26 - 28 May 2003, in cooperation with INSULA,
the International Scientific Council for Island Development, and
RENES, Renewable Energy Sources Unit of the National Technical
University of Athens, and with the support of the European
Commission, the World Tourism Organisation and TUI AG.
Renewable energy sources are capable of solving
many problems related to security of energy supply, environmental
protection and economic development. They are especially suitable to
cover the energy needs of islands and the tourism sector.
Furthermore, they can successfully be applied to technologies like
desalination. This conference will focus on providing solutions for
RES integration in islands, tourism and desalination.
Objetctives
Inform on successful examples of RES
promotion on islands (e.g. 100% RES supply of islands), in the
tourism and desalination sectors.
Identify suitable RES technologies and
exchange experience on successful application of these
technologies on islands, in the tourism sector and in the field of
desalination.
Indicate national and international legal
frameworks and regulatory solutions that facilitate the
integration of RES.
Describe necessary awareness actions that
help consolidate the essential role of renewable energies in
energy supply, quality of life and environmental protection.
Identify appropriate technologies and
barriers to RES-powered desalination schemes in small and medium-sized
islands.
Disseminate information on specific policies
and market opportunities for desalination systems powered by
renewable energy.
Encourage the development of a sustainable
method of producing drinking water using RES.
